Selena Gomez (Selena Marie Gomez; July 22, 1992)
Selena Gomez is an American singer and actress. She was born as well as raised in Texas, particularly in Grand Prairie. Her parents are Ricardo Joel Gomez and Amanda Dawn “Mandy” Cornett, who was a stage actress then. Selena’s name was obtained from a singer named Selena Quintanilla-Perez.
She has a Hispanic heritage and her family does everything that is Catholic, as she has said. Her family experienced financial troubles when she was still a child. Back then, she frustrated about her parents not being together considering that her mother had her when she was just 16. Hence, her mother had to work hard to provider for her and the family. Unfortunately, the marriage of her parents ended at the time when she was only five years old.
As a grandchild, Selena was really close with grandparents considering that they were the one taking care of her while her parents were finishing their schooling. Once asked, her grandparents stated then that they raised her until she made her way and achieved success in the industry she is in now.
The Beginning – Her Growing Interest
Selena Gomez, like most people who is now known in the industry she is in, also had her inspiration which led her to enter the entertainment industry. Her interest to pursue and start a career in the industry started during those times when she would just watch her mother as she prepares for the stage productions. That interested grew, which resulted to her auditioning for roles. It was during those auditions when she met Demi Lovato, particularly the audition for the TV series, where she first appeared, Barney and Friends.
Luckily, both of them were selected and given the chance to appear on the television series aired in 2002, where she portrayed the role as Gianna. In a statement she made, she told that she was shy when she was still a little. She also said that she had no idea what blocking and camera right was. But this first appearance and experience she had in acting also become the “teacher” that taught her everything she knew now.
Like any other artists, Selena also have those major influencers in her music. Bruno Mars is the one she stated as her major influence and also her idol. His influence to her involved almost everything, from his own music style to the manner which he performs and carries himself. She also mentioned Rihanna and Beyonce as among her other significant influences.
Her Entry to Hollywood
As a child, the first time she was seen on TV was in Barney and Friends, a children’s series. But her fame only started in 2007 when she was casted in TV series shown in Disney Channel known as the Wizards of Waverly Place. There, she portrayer the character of Alex Russo until it ended in 2012.
Still know as the Alex Russo in the Wizards of Waverly Place, she decided to pursue another road and formed her own band. This band is what became as what almost everyone knew now as the Selena Gomez & The Scene. Selena formed the band right after signing a contract with the Hollywood Records in the year 2008. By 2009, the band was able to release its first studio album titled Kiss & Tell. The following year, they released A Year without Rain. By 2012, another was released, titled When the Sun Goes Down. Right after that, the band went hiatus in 2012.
Back in 2012, Selena also started pursuing another field in the entertainment industry – the film industry. Among the films she was featured in includes Ramona and Beezus, released in 2010. The next year, she was featured in Monte Carlo and Hotel Transylvania in the next.
By 2013, Selena started embracing a mature public image. A proof of that was the controversial film released that year, the Spring Breakers. It was also in the same year when Selena made her first appearance in her solo studio album, the Stars Dance. This same project became a hit that it reached the top 1 on the US Billboard 200. Following Stars Dance was Come & Get It, which also became a hit and got in on Billboard Hot 100’s Top Ten Single.
In 2014, her recording contract with the Hollywood Records was ended. She was released right after the completion of For You, which was tagged as her greatest hit album. After being released by Hollywood Records, she signer her next contract with Interscope Records, where she continued working on her next studio album.
On Her Own
Her success as an artist was expected. But aside from the endeavors she took in the industry, she later on decided that it is time to start something of her own. From this, she launched a production company of her own, the July Moon Productions.
Selena partnered with the XYZ Films, an action that gave her the opportunity to hire writers, option articles as well as create her talent packages she can offer to studios. She created the production company in 2008. By 2010, Selena entered another venture, which involved launching her own clothing line, the Dream Out Loud. It is a brand featuring materials that are all made from recycled or eco-friendly materials. In 2011, Selena again started a new venture by releasing her self-titled perfume.
